Martorana fruit is a typical Sicilian pastry and consists of realistic depictions of fruit made of

Sicilian almond dough and decorated by hand.

Martorana fruit is well renowned in the whole of Italy and has been recognised by the Ministry of

Agriculture and Forestry as a traditional agri-food product exclusive to Sicily.

According to Sicilian tradition, Martorana fruit is prepared to commemorate the dearly departed.

The name comes from its place of origin, the Convent of Martorana, located in the centre of Palermo. Legend has it that the nuns made fruit out of almonds to decorate the barren trees as king Charles V visited in the middle of the winter.
